Getting Started

The International Institute of Tattoo Apprenticeship Program is a one year comprehensive program that teaches you all of the various skills that are necessary to become a professional Journeyman Tattooist, able to work in, or manage a first class licensed tattoo studio. When you complete the course, you will be able to work in any professional studio in the world, or open your own studio. We have several graduates who have gone on to work in such well known studios as well as open their own studios.

We will teach you all about the Tattoo Machine; how it works, how it has evolved, how to keep it tuned, and how to “tweak” it to do specific jobs, or affects. We will make you familiar with all the different machines available to the serious tattooist, and give you the knowledge necessary to choose the right machines for your specific needs. By the time you have completed your apprenticeship, you’ll be able to take your machine apart, and put it back together blind-folded, and tune it the way Jimi Hendrix tuned his guitar. We will also teach you all about the various Power Supplies, and electrical circuits, and how to diagnose, repair, and build them.

You will be required to attend at least two Tattoo Conventions per year, as well as at least three seminars on tattoo related subjects per year. We will provide you with a comprehempsive reading list of Tattoo Related Subjects to expand your knowledge of techniques, history, and tradition. While you are an Apprentice, you will have the opportunity for “On the Job Training”, where you will work in a professional setting in one of our Austin studios, and to “Earn while you Learn”.

You will receive “hands-on” instruction as you work in the studio from Master Tattooist, Notorious Ed, with over 40 years of experience. Notorious Ed has been tattooing since 1964, and has been tattooing professionally since 1967. He has used almost every type of tattoo machine, and technique there is, both valid, and otherwise. If there is an incorrect technique, he’s tried it. Take advantage of all those years of experience, so that you don’t have to repeat those mistakes. Notorious Ed will not only teach you the correct methods and techniques, he will tell you why it is done the way it is. You will learn to spot trouble before it happens, and what to do to correct mistakes, or bad technique. Every aspect of this fascinating profession will be laid before you. Tattooing is more of a Craft, a mastery of several different skills that can be mastered by anyone with the discipline, and determination to learn them, than an Art by itself. “It ain’t a Job, it’s a Lifestyle!
